Volunteer Opportunities

Greeter

Greeters welcome visitors at the entrance to the historic Nevada State Prison and provide a friendly first point of contact. They check in guests for scheduled guided tours, verify reservations or ticket purchases, ensure Liability Waivers are completed for all visitors, and answer basic questions about the site and tour process.

Greeters offer directions and information to ensure visitors feel comfortable and prepared. They support tour staff by helping organize groups and maintaining an orderly flow from the parking lot in through the Guard Tower ("One Tower").

Greeters represent the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society with warmth and professionalism, helping set a positive tone for each visitor’s experience.

Tour Lead

Guided tours and indoor/outdoor history presentations are offered throughout the year, with times and frequency varying depending upon the season. Guided tours are typically around ninety (90) minutes in length.

Tour leads and presenters are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and respectful regarding the difficult history of the Nevada State Prison and those affected by it, including victims and descendants.

Typically, Tour Guides have served as Tour Sweeps for one or more seasons, while learning and developing rich, historical knowledge of Nevada State Prison. After one or more seasons as a Tour Sweep, volunteers may begin to serve as a Tour Lead.

Primary Duties:

  • Represent the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society and its standards for excellent customer service.
  • Teach visitors about the history of the site.
  • Demonstrate to visitors how to be good stewards of Nevada State Prison history.

Tour Sweep

Guided tours and indoor/outdoor history presentations are offered throughout the year, with times and frequency varying depending upon the season. Guided tours are typically around ninety (90) minutes in length.

Tour Sweeps are friendly, enthusiastic, and respectful regarding the difficult history of the Nevada State Prison.

Typically, Tour Sweeps are newer to Nevada State Prison Preservation Society tour operations, and may still be developing the deep, historical knowledge of Nevada State Prison. After one or more seasons as a Tour Sweep, volunteers may begin to serve as a Tour Lead.

Primary Duties:

  • Represent the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society and its standards for excellent customer service.
  • Support Tour Leads on Guided Tours.
  • Demonstrate to visitors how to be good stewards of Nevada State Prison history.

Museum Ambassador

The Nevada State Prison Museum & Gift Shop is open on scheduled tour days and during special pre-scheduled events. Shifts are dependent on visitation, program, event, and outreach schedules.

Museum Ambassadors are stationed in the Nevada State Prison Administrative Building and Museum during scheduled days and times of high visitation.

Museum Ambassadors may also represent the Nevada State Prison Museum at outreach booths in the community. After their initial training session, Museum Ambassadors greet visitors, answer questions regarding the Museum, provide orientation to visitors, help facilitate hands-on learning. They may perform light cleaning of public spaces within the Administrative Building, as necessary.

What are we looking for?

  • Enthusiasm for working with a wide range of visitors to the museum from diverse backgrounds.
  • A willingness to learn and teach new things.
  • Storytellers with a passion for historical accuracy.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • The ability to complete tasks independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to stand on your feet for up to 3 hours.
  • A love for Nevada State Prison and its history!

Volunteers will …

  • Greet visitors and answer questions regarding the Museum.
  • Provide basic orientation to visitors.
  • Become familiar with the exhibits throughout the Museum.
  • Coordinate with Gift Shop staff to perform light cleaning of the Administrative Building as necessary
  • Watch over the galleries and exhibits to make sure visitors are respectful and knowledgeable of Museum artifacts.

Gift Shop Attendant

The Nevada State Prison Museum & Gift Shop is open on scheduled tour days and during special pre-scheduled events. Shifts are dependent on visitation, program, event, and outreach schedules.

Gift Shop Attendants primarily support the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society's mission by promoting educational and souvenir items that enhance the visitor experience.

Gift Shop Attendants greet and assist visitors in the Gift Shop, providing friendly customer service and product knowledge. They operate the cash register, handle sales transactions, and maintain accurate records. Gift Shop Attendants restock merchandise, keep displays organized and appealing, and ensure the shop is clean and welcoming.

Under the guidance of the Gift Shop Supervisor, Attendants may assist with inventory management, pricing, and/or special promotions.

Special Events/Projects Support

The Nevada State Prison hosts special events on-site throughout the year, including Cinema Unlocked, Paranormal Investigations, Art exhibitions, Dark Prison Haunt, seasonal events, annual conferences, film productions, and more.

Many staff and volunteers are required for the success of these events, with positions including Event Managers, Greeters, Docents, Facility Patrol, Tour Leads & Sweeps, set-up/tear-down support, and special positions depending upon the event.

Volunteers are often recruited for specific special events. Regularly scheduled volunteers will be given the opportunity to work during special events whenever possible.

The events volunteer position may require late evening and weekend shifts.

Yard & Facility Maintenance

As you can imagine, the yard and facility maintenance volunteers are the unsung heroes of our operations. Shifts and duties are available for all skill levels, working under the guidance of staff or project leads, and following safety procedures at all times.

Maintenance volunteers support the care and preservation of the historic Nevada State Prison by assisting with basic maintenance tasks. They help with cleaning, organizing, and light repairs to keep the property safe, functional, and welcoming for visitors.

Volunteers may assist with landscaping, painting, setup for events, and general upkeep of historic spaces. They contribute to protecting and maintaining this unique historic site for future generations.
