Nevada State Prison opened in 1862, even before Nevada became a state. It is one of the oldest prisons in the West and was in use for over 150 years before being decommissioned in 2012. The Nevada State Prison played an important role in Nevada's history, protecting its citizens, influencing its architecture, providing employment, and amassing an impressive list of historically significant events.

In October of 2015, after months of hard work by the Society, the Nevada State Prison was approved for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Who We Are

After the prison was decommissioned, the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society was formed on November 1, 2012 with the goal of preserving, interpreting, and developing this important site for the education of present and future generations. Today the Society operates as a charitable nonprofit organization as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Assembly Bill 377, signed into law during the 2015 Nevada Legislature, provides a framework for development of this historic site and defines the role of NSPPS. The Society has been hard at work ever since.

Our Mission Statement

The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society preserves the Nevada State Prison for the education of the State's citizens and visitors regarding the role of the institution in the development of Nevada's government, the architecture of Carson City, and the protection of Nevada's communities.
