Nevada State Prison was in continuous operation from its establishment in 1862 until its closure in 2012 - 150 years! These are the stories of Nevada State Prison's history - from the property's original owner, to prison industry, dramatic escapes, political standoffs, the history of incarceration, and Movies & Television Series filmed at and featuring the facility. Abe Curry
Abe Curry was one of the first, and certainly the most important settler of Eagle Valley, the site of Carson City.

The Great Escape
The most dramatic event in the history of the prison occurred on September 17, 1871.

Prison Industry
Industry represented the primary means of support for the prison during its operation. Learn more about the now infamous sandstone quarry, the shoe shop, the mattress factory, and license plate manufacturing.

Fossils
From fossilized footprints of prehistoric creatures to mammoths, native horses, large birds, dire wolves, big-toothed cats, and sloths, the fossils uncovered within the quarry stone provides rich historical significance for scientific research and demonstration.

The Longest Escape
Leonard Fristoe walked away in 1923. His escape lasted for 45 years before he was returned to NSP.


Executions
The 1901 state legislature required that all executions be conducted by hanging at the state prison in Carson City beginning in 1903.
