In April 2016, public access to the prison was suspended by state officials until such time as an application for change in use is submitted and a new occupancy permit is issued. We reached an important milestone this week when the agreement between the Department of Corrections and the Society was amended to allow the Society to engage the services of the architect and engineer who will now begin the code analysis. During this phase, the architect will assess the existing building conditions relative to the proposed use, based on statutes, adopted building codes and federal accessibility laws. Drawings and reports from this phase will accompany an application from the Department of Corrections to the State Public Works Board. Modifications to the prison must then be approved by the State Office of Historical Preservation and Corrections. We anticipate that our architect will begin work very soon. After months of waiting, we are finally turning the corner on making NSP the historic destination we have all envisioned. Updates will follow!
